Blog Post #4
My online learning experience didn't begin until I entered college as a freshman. I took my first online class, Art and the Environment, in the 2017 spring semester. I loved the dynamic of being able to work at your own pace, and fitting studying/learning time into my busy schedule whenever I wanted to. The LMS used for all online courses at FSU is canvas, and it's fairly simple to understand. At first, I was afraid to take an online class, thinking that I wasn't going to be able to understand the material all by myself with out having that an in person professor, but as the semester continued I became accustomed to the weekly assignments and projects. The learning was an asynchronous communication. The instructor would post weekly modules with the tasks at hand, the expectations, and at times recorded lectures for the week. While I've enjoyed the few online classes that I've taken during my undergraduate degree, I do feel I learn best in a classroom. I prefer to listen to professors lectures in person, and to ask questions as they're taking, and online classes makes that harder.
OER's are resources/materials that anyone can use and are free to the public. For example, I've had to write multiple research papers for my classes, and using academic articles that are evidence-based and peer-reviewed are examples of an OER. This link discusses what OER's are and 5 common questions about them https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2017/03/29/what-is-oer-5-questions-about-open-oer.html
I enjoyed working on the newsletter design assignment. I liked it mainly because it's something that we will utilize in our future classrooms. I liked learning about how to use the mail merger and the ways to insert the child's name and parents so easily. What I didn't like about the assignment was that we had to save it as 3 different types of documents. It also took me a while to figure out how to bullet items on both sides of the columns so I didn't like that. There are a couple of things that I want to fix for when I make newsletters in the future, such as moving the permission slip to the bottom of the page and providing more information to parents about events coming up. In my future career, knowing how to better use the mail merger tool, as well as others, will be used when sending newsletters home to parents.

I completely understand why online classes makes that harder. But I hope you will enjoy this online course. Please let me know if you have any questions. :)
